I spent an evening with a small group of beer enthusiasts learning about beer judging. The head brewer from Lucette Brewing Company in Menomonie, WI led the discussion to familiarize people with structured tasting against the standards set by BJCP. From their website: “The purpose of the Beer Judge Certification Program is to promote beer literacy and the appreciation of real beer, and to recognize beer tasting and evaluation skills. We certify and rank beer judges through an examination and monitoring process.”
Part of the discussion centers on some of the resistance among brewers to compartmentalize beer into styles. I inject some of my perspective about styles and their true role in beer.
Judging beer is challenging in a way I didn’t expect. I’m looking forward to doing more of it.
